Dungeons and Dragons Online – Another Choice

Posted by Stropp on June 20, 2009

Due to my recently required spendthriftiness I’ve found myself taking more notice when I see news of an upcoming free to play MMORPG pop up on the web. Even though the term, Free To Play, isn’t really true since most of these games strongly encourage the use of RMT to progress, there are substantial cost savings for someone like me who tends to switch games regularly. Instead of dropping $15 a month, every month, if there’s a need to pay to progress it’s a one off cost per character.

So the announcement that Dungeons and Dragons Online is going to a free to play model in the near the future certainly sparks my interest. I did subscribe a while back, but only for a couple of months between other games. At the time it came across as a reasonably decent MMORPG, but in the end I couldn’t justify the monthly fee to keep subscribing. But with this announcement that decision becomes a whole lot easier.

I may not subscribe the moment DDO goes F2P, that depends on what else I’m playing (and doing) at the time, but I expect that at some time soon I’ll be crawling through some DDO dungeons.

  1. Harmen Said,

I’m playing Runes of Magic lately, another f2p. There are weeks I can’t play mmos, so it works better for me not to have to pay for a subscription.

  2. Stropp Said,

I see all these F2P games and I weep for more free time. Oh to be independantly wealthy. I’ve seen a bit of talk about RoM lately, one of these days I’ll have to give it a go.

I suspect F2p will change the landscape of MMORPG subscription models in the next few years. Wil it be the death of the monthly subscription?
