Terminator The MMORPG

Posted by Stropp on June 19, 2009

I was just looking at Graev’s review of the Terminator Salvation (movie tie-in) game. I guess it’s no surprise but Graev reports it as being a pretty mediocre game. That seems to be the fate of most movie tie-ins (anyone remember the ET game? There’s supposedly a mythical landfill comprised entirely of the cartridges of this game.) And the Matrix Online was a subpar attempt to capitalise on the Matrix franchise, soon to join the MMO Deadpool.

About the only movie tie-in that I’ve played that was anygood was the Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Maybe that’s because Vin Diesel is a gamer, and involved in making games.

But anyway, here’s a thought. The post-apocalptic setting of the Terminator movies would make a fantastic framework for a MMORPG.

Obviously it would have to be PvP since it’s a war between man and machine, but there is a ton of scope for inventing new scenarios and mythology. Especially since the (movies acknowledge) that the future is fluid and changes based on the actions of the protagonists/antagonists sent back in time.

Hypothetically, if a Terminator MMORPG were on the drawing boards, what would you like to see in it?

As much as I agree with you that it’d be a great setting for a MMO, I wouldn’t want to be the poor dev tasked with balancing that game…even though a 1 vs 10 “battleground” would be quite a sight. :D

  2. Daniel Said,

I think it’s clear that a Terminator Salvation MMORPG could market itself as THE actual war, since the whole thing is fictional and, as you say, totally fluid. The USP could be that players can consider themselves actual fighters in the Skynet/Tech-Com war.

Two sides – Tech-Com and Skynet. In each, there is scope for massive modding, including expanding the open-world map, deforming and changing the landscape, managing a small army and creating new weapons (and in Skynet’s case, new terminators). The map would initially be a massive, ruined LA surrounded by valleys, desert, ocean, etc., like GTA: SA. You capture territory and manage resources, which are scarce. The aim of the game? The total destruction of the opposing side, and nothing less. If ever that happened, the sides would be reset and the game begins again.

I’d just like to add that I waive all copyright to this idea and what I have written here, okay game companies?
