Asheron’s Call: Any Plans for Cake and Streamers, Turbine?
Posted by Stropp on June 11, 2009Everquest recently had a series of events celebrating the 10th anniversary of the venerable MMORPG, but did you know that Asheron’s Call is rapidly approaching its 10th birthday too?
Asheron’s Call was released on November the 2nd, 1999. I started playing around the Autumn of 2000 (that’s around April/May downunder) and continued for most of the next year. It was my first MMORPG, and pretty much my first online game of any sort other than some networked singleplayer games, and a session or two of some random MUD.
My first character was a horribly gimped Archer called Axis. I didn’t realise at the time that min/maxing attributes for the specialisation was the most effective way to get started and he ended up being a virtual jack of all trades, and master of none. But he was fun, and I have fond memories of running through dungeons outside of Holtsburg, and (in particular) running across country through all sorts of critters (many of which could eat me in a snap) to climb a mountain that I saw in the distance.
Axis only reached 16 or 17 despite being played for several months, before I rerolled and created a series of characters (mostly melee) who specialised in Axes, Unarmed, and Spear. I also gave magic a shot — this was where I discovered my life-long altitis affliction.
That all seems like a long time ago now.
But, I am wondering (back to the subject of this post) if Turbine are planning any tenth anniversary celebrations for Asheron’s Call. Anyone know or heard anything?
