300,000
Posted by Stropp on February 5, 2009It’s a number I didn’t really expect to see this soon.
The publishers of MMORPG’s tend to keep subscriber numbers away from the public eye… unless of course the numbers make them really happy.
Blizzard is really happy that it’s the biggest show in town.
CCP is really happy that they are breaking records for server populations with Eve.
Funcom was really happy with the number of Age of Conan sales… for a while.
From what I gather Mythic and EA aren’t too happy even though they have a respectable number of subscribers.
Zubon over at Kill Ten Rats makes the case that 300,000 subscribers is a good number, and he’s right up to a point. There aren’t too many Western MMOG’s around that can claim those sorts of numbers, so Mythic is in pretty good company. Most smaller MMO publishers would be pretty happy with half the subscribers of WAR.
But the EA/Mythic team are also right. They bet the farm on Warhammer Online having at least 600,000 subscribers, and managed their development accordingly.

Well done Stropp one of the only writeups i have seen on this subject which doesnt have a swipe at WoW and ‘WoW tourists’.
I, as you know tried Warhammer after I had burnout from TBC expansion and just couldnt stomach conan or LoTRO however I really wanted warhammer to be the all singing all dancing game that Mr Jacobs was flapping his gums about……… It simply wasnt. I actually had more fun in the beta than the actual game. We were promised not having a grind to lvl 40 however with little or no participation in PvE or public quests it made it very difficult and repetitive.
It still has alot of potential and I may well return once iv completed the WoTLK expansion however I think Wrath has enough content to keep me there for a while. Id also hear some whispers that WoW is releasing another expansion late this year? posibility?
Thanks. The current meme about WoW Tourists is bothering me a bit at the moment, and I’m brewing up a post about it. I mean how do you hold the market responsible for not wanting to play, or leaving a game? Odd.
Yeah I wrote a little article however I tend to be a little bias, interested to see your take on things as you usually offer up a fair point of view.
