Slapping Dragons for Fun and Profit

The Moustache of Evil Reaches 61

Posted by Stropp on February 3, 2009

I didn’t spend a lot of time on the weekend gaming. There was a Battlestar Galactica marathon on SciFi Channel Australia all day Saturday showing the first half of the latest (last?) season all the way up to the latest episode of the satellite. And it was hot. I mean really hot. Center of the sun hot. Okay, I exaggerate, perhaps not the center of the sun, just the photosphere. Even with Air Cond, it got up to 27 degrees C, cold tap water was warm.

Hot and sticky, sitting at a desk, doesn’t make for fun game time.

But I did spend Sunday morning and a bit of the afternoon on WoW with EvilMo, the Death Knight with the evil moustache. I continued to run around Hellfire Peninsula killing pretty much anything I was asked, and clearing out quests. At the end of it, and with some time spent last night, EvilMo reached 61.5. (He’s really looking forward to 66.6.)

Actually, I’m looking forward to getting to 68 so that I can send EvilMo off to Northrend. Apart from the initial impressions of The Burning Crusade zones, I’ve not been really partial to them. I’ve been hearing players raving about the Northrend content, aside from the PvP zone, and I’d really like to see it. So, for the Mo of Evil it’s going to be a quest grind to 68, and then off to Northrend. I’ll catch up with the remaining BC zones when I get to it.

I also ran a couple of missions in Eve. I subscribed once again to this game a couple of weeks ago for the third time. I’ve always wanted to like Eve, it has a lot that I’ve always wanted in a MMOG, but I’ve always felt directionless.

The first time I played, I had no idea what to do, and tried to be a jack of all trades. That failed miserably and I just got bored. Mostly with the travel. I played it like any other MMOG, that was my mistake. Pick up as many missions as I can and do them. I didn’t realize at the time Eve is a one-mission-at-a-time type of game. I spent five times as much time traveling as I spent doing something fun.

This time, I’d seen a few posts by other bloggers that encouraged me back into the game. I decided, that the best thing to do was to concentrate on one aspect of Eve at a time. So I created Stropp McStropp mission runner extraordinaire, who, unfortunately, doesn’t have an evil moustache.

After doing the initial tutorial and event missions, I went out to look for an agent that would suit me. One thing I didn’t want to do this time around was have to jump from system to system. As I understand it, Kill Agents tend to provide missions in their own system or close by, so I went looking.

I finally found an agent who would actually talk to me, and started doing missions. My first was in a deadspace pocket with a whole lot of drones with a lot of low threats, a few moderate threats, and one significant threat, all bunched together. At first I thought I’d be overwhelmed, but Eve is a tactical game, moreso that most other MMOG’s. So I got close, locked and fired a missile at the significant drone, turned around and waited a bit and then kited him.

I was being chased by every drone, but I burned down the boss by keeping him at distance, and then turned my missiles on the remaining drones. It took a little while, but I got ‘em all. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to finish looting before the daily downtime, but it was still a profitable mission.

I’m not expecting Eve to become my main MMOG obsession, I figure that honor belongs to WoW for the moment, but it really is an enjoyable diversion when I sit at the computer wondering if I feel like logging into World of Warcraft. I’ve been building up a few of these extra diversions lately.

  1. Sara Pickell Said,

If you’re going to be a mission runner, look into salvaging.

  2. Pitrelli Said,

Well iv finally made it to Northrend and trust me it is fantastic. The graphics have surprised me as well they look alot fresher and cleaner. Well worth the grind of outland

  3. Blue Kae Said,

EVE definitely makes a good secondary MMO. Anytime I want to game but I can’t devote a solid block of time, I know I can pop into EVE for 5 to 30 minutes and do some mining or missions. Sounds like you’re on the right track now. Pick an agent for a faction you want to work on and just do missions out of that System. Sara is dead-on with the salvaging, it adds quite a bit to the amount of money you can make. I would also suggest afterburners and tractor beams to speed up the looting/salvaging stage.

  4. Stropp Said,

@Pitrelli – I’m looking forward to it. Just 6 and a bit levels to go.

@Sara Pickell – Thanks for the salvaging tip. I had a look at the skill and bought the pre-requisite skill for it, but the actual salvaging skill will need the funds from a few more mission runs.

@Blue Kae – Thanks for the tips about the afterburners and tractors, looting can be a pretty slow process. Anything to speed it up.
