AoC Servers and Preorder Madness

Posted by Stropp on May 18, 2008

A couple of days ago, Funcom released the server names for the Age of Conan US servers.

The PvE servers are called:

  • Set
  • Dagoth
  • Zug
  • Omm
  • Derketo
  • Thog
  • Wiccana
  • Gwahlur (recommended for Oceanic players)
  • Anu

The PvP Servers are:

  • Tyranny
  • Bane
  • Deathwisper
  • Bloodspire (recommended for Oceanic players)
  • Doomsayer
  • Cimmeria (RP-PvP Server)

Bildo has a more complete list including the Age of Conan European servers. You might like to check it out.

The news has also broken, much to the extreme annoyance of many Age of Conan Preorder customers, that the early access program has closed. So if you’ve preordered AoC and haven’t got early access, you are so out of luck.

Apparently the reason is that Funcom have had so many preorders and early access requests they have run of out of server space. Funcom is busy converting beta servers into release servers, but they can’t keep up with demand. Hopefully this demand won’t translate into meltdown of release day.

While I was holidaying in Coffs Harbour I received a call from EB Games that my preorder card had arrived. Since I had dinner plans it was a little difficult to duck home and pick it up, so it looks like I’ve missed out on the early access. The other bad news was that, for some reason, the game box has been delayed to the 27th of May. So if I want to play on opening day, I’ll have to download the game (and pay the File Planet fees I suppose.)

With the size of the download being in the vicinity of 12 GB, and some large patches, I’ve decided to wait until the box arrives. At least I’ll miss any opening day blues, or server meltdowns.

When it does, I’ve decided to do what it seems every other blogger is doing and create my character on the Wiccana server. Keen and Graev, Bildo (and the Ten Ton Hammer team), and Michael (MMOG Nation) have all announced that they are rolling on Wiccana. Hmmm. I guess it’s the unofficial blogger server.

What server are you going to roll on?

  1. Super Ally Said,

Hey stropp welcome back and i hope you had a good trip

Im one of the lucky ones on the EU servers that got early access, id already joined a guild and it was decided we were to homed on Dagon PvE server (character name - Pitrelli). Ive been playing since Friday and have been creating and deleting characters constantly, take my advice spend a fair bit on character customisation as if you dont like your toon it gets a bit frustrating.

I have settled on a Ranger and am currently levelling him at this time (lvl 14 at present). The starting area imo is brilliant - the quests and cut scenes actually get you interested and everything seems to have a purpose. For me however the real winner at the first 1-20 levels is the option of night and day mode. At day time you can quest with friends however you can go to the inn and change to night mode, night mode is where imo you learn alot more and you get into your role alot more - it is here that you complete your class quests if you like(a bit like wow).

Anyway, as to be expected the game still has minor glitches but tbh im pleasantly surprised there arent more. It looks and plays fantastically well, with the combat system proving to be a real winner. I could drone on and on about how great this game is and will be but i will let you experience it for yourself.

    So finally:

Is it worth the wait? Your damn right it is

Will i be tempted back to WoW? No way

  2. Bildo Said,

    Hey Stropp,

    Thanks for the link, mate.

Indeed what Super Ally says is true… this one’s a keeper.

  3. Super Ally Said,

Further to what i have written before I do have a few complaints:

The chat channels are difficult and fiddly to access - something which warcraft had down to a T in my opinion, more should be done to be able to quickly whisper someone etc

Also quest tracking is annoying as you can only track one quest at a time

Lag spikes are becoming more frequent in the city area for me - the Aoc forum states to close and reopen which seems to fix this but it is a bit annoying. Im giving my pc a small upgrade next month so hopefully the game will run alot smoother.

Load screen times - unlike warcraft when you enter certain buildings/areas you are greeted with load screens which in some cases take a while to let you in

They are only minor complaints however and im sure they will recieve enough feedback to rectify these points (hopefully).

  4. Stropp Said,

@ Super Ally - Thanks for the review Super Ally. I’m feeling encouraged that the release has gone so well. I was a bit nervous that Funcom would make a complete balls-up of the game and do a Vanguard. Since that hasn’t happened I’m looking forward to getting into it when my box finally arrives.

@ Bildo - No probs, you’ve been a good source of info about AoC. It deserves a link.
