Hi Jakob,

I've wondered about the niche thing myself, and to some extent you are right, companies won't necessarily do as well in a niche. By definition they are marketing to a smaller crowd than if they were going for a general audience.

Having said that, in some cases a niche might end up doing better - especially if there is a huge competitor in the general space. WoW has set a high bar to jump, but AoC by aiming at a smaller more specialised market might actually do better than if they went for the same market that WoW lives in.

Just thought I'd add a comment about ratings. I enjoy MMOs, but I like being able to play them with my kids (teen and preteen), so "M" is pretty much out for us. I think Age of Conan looks like it might be a fun game, but I do wish it were rated "T" rather than "M" -- or that there were "T" versions or servers available. Most of the content that draws the "M" rating is just stuff I can live without anyway.

I wonder sometimes if companies are improving or hurting their sales/market niche by their choice of content/ESRB rating. I think Funcom is making a marketing mistake here, but then they didn't consult me, so ... whatever. :)

My friends tell me I'm quite disturbed. Oh, that's not what you mean...

I'll wait until the end of the poll to say where I stand. :-)
