I’m too Ugly for this Blood Elf

Posted by Stropp on January 12, 2007

A few months ago I reported that Blizzard had updated the models for the male Blood Elves in a post called Beefed Up Blood Elves. It’s always been one of the more viewed articles that I have written, but over the last few days I’ve noticed quite a jump in people viewing and commenting on that post.

So I checked my stats. Aside from a lot of Google searches, I’ve had a ton of incoming visitors from Wikipedia. Looks like Beefed Up Blood Elves has been referenced in the Wikipedia entry about Blood Elves. I wasn’t expecting that. I certainly don’t consider myself an authority on Blood Elf attributes or their lore. But still, what a blast! Over the last week I’ve had several hundred hits originating from Wikipedia.

Not everyone agrees with my opinion though. In Beefed Up Blood Elves, I put forward that I thought it was a good thing that Blizzard was making them more intimidating, and that I thought it would be good to make them more Hordish. My second post on the matter, Uglify the Blood Elves, Blizzard was a bit more tongue in cheek and built on the theme of making the Belfs more into the Horde mold.

bloodelf.jpgIt seems that people are fairly passionate about Blood Elves. I’ve been told my opinion is wrong. I’ve been informed of the intricacies of Blood Elf lore. I’ve even been told to hang myself with my keyboard. lol.

Well, I won’t hang myself because my opinion doesn’t match up with yours. Sorry! But, I’ll give you the reason why I have this opinion.

I simply just don’t care for stylized representations of beauty. Pretty much all the games I play, I pick character styles that don’t look beautiful. In Eve my character looks like he went 250 rounds each with Rocky, Mr T, and a brick wall. My EQ2 character is a Barbarian. Only in Guild Wars do I have a pretty character… simply because it’s not possible to create a character that doesn’t look impossibly gorgeous. My main WoW Alliance character is a burly beer-swilling bar-fighting Dwarf called Klarm.

lursa.jpgEven on TV, I have a fondness for the ugly characters. My favorite Star Trek characters are the Klingons. What a great species. Much better than the culturally stagnant Federation. Klingons really know how to have fun. It annoys me that most of the aliens encountered in SciFi look just like humans, but with a tiny difference like wrinkled noses or pointy ears.

That’s the reason I’d like to see the Blood Elves take on a more menacing look. I don’t think World of Warcraft needs another pretty race, on either side. There are three already, and three is enough.

Now I’d like to hear what you think. Don’t just tell me I am wrong, or to hang myself. That’s just lame. Don’t just echo the lore, or even what someone else has said on the subject. Tell me your reasons why you think Blood Elves should be one way or another.

I want to hear what you think.

I think you’re right, We do have enough pretty races, Belf’s should be at least uglied a little, Certainly their lore, etc, says otherwise, but hey! It’s WoW Blizz can do what they want

I mentioned in I’m Too Ugly for this Blood Elf that I’ve been getting a surge in traffic from a Wikipedia article. I’ve also seen a lot of search strings in my blog and awstats statistics for Blood Elves, Blood Elf, and other variations on the spelling. But I noticed my stats didn’t seem to show any search strings for the Draeni. …

  3. Deadr Said,

I think the BEs should look like they were hopped up on ‘roids for a Mr. Universe competition. No more namby pamby elves. These are horde, for crying out loud. THEN I might roll an elf. They have to look like an elf with an orc daddy first.

  4. D3M3N Said,

I have never played WoW but I am trying to get into it and I have played WC3. I like the Blood Elfs just because they are a cool character. If you want an ugly character with the horde then pick from the other four races that are ugly. I think that Blizzard did a good job of giving horde players another option for race rather than the characteristically ugly characters from the original.

You’re quite right. It’s Blizzard’s game, and they can certainly do what they want to do with it. I just like to offer an alternative viewpoint.

    Deadr

I have a mental picture now of the Belf males looking like Arnie and Sylvester in their younger days. If they could only have an Austrian mumble accent now! Huge! Perhaps we can get the females beefed up too. Some of those lady bodybuilders are hot!!!

In all seriousness, I agree that Blizzard did a good job with the Belfs and their starting areas. I don’t know if I consider them to be a cool character, and I’d still like to see them with more of a junkie style. After all they are addicted to magic.

Alright guys the horde is just a band of races that have a grudge against the alliance. In fact the horde has even worked with the alliance. So I don’t see they should be changed just cause ya’ll don’t think they’re "Horde" like. They arn’t ment to look like horde! They were with the alliance they’ve their own back story and character….

  8. blearkaven Said,

Well why shouldn’t they be pretty? I mean you can be evil and be pretty! *cough*arthas*cough* Well, give a chance to players who like characters both pretty and evil… Why should only the goodie goodies be pretty? Because they are good? There isn’t even a pretty race in Alliance (in my opinion) and the males all look like big meat balls, so big and ugly… The blood elves are neat, evil, small and cute. Killer Beauty. So why not? You don’t like them, but there are MANY players who screamed: FINNALY! A PRETTY EVIL CHARACTER!So, you don’t like them, don’t play as them. Leave them be… They aren’t interfering with your life, are they?I say: Leave the pretty bad guys as they are.

    Blearkaven,

I definitely agree with you that the human males look like big meat balls. I even created a human mage at one stage and got the hair wrong. With the the mage robes, and the pony tails, he looked like a big hairy girl!

Well i think the BE are quite fine the way they are for the most part.  Just because someone is on the horde doesn’t mean they have to be totally devoid of the basic human concept of beauty.  I do see your point though about them being a little too pretty, but then again they are elves.  Elves are supposed to be pretty, heck even in the ugly world of Warhammer the dark elves are, for the most part, an attractive people.  If i were to change one thing i would change the type of beautiful, less night elf and more succubus looks if you get my meaning.  Evil often comes beautifully wrapped and the BE are a perfect example of this.  Instead of having the glow of the sunwell in them perhaps we could see their eyes glow blood red when Mana Tap is used for a few seconds. You can make someone look terrible and gorgeous at the same time.  Take a look at the Fair Folk from the Exalted RPG…fine looking bunch but there is just something…off…about them that says to the wise: "Don’t Touch".  That’s just my two cents

  11. Meia Said,

Well I think Blizzard should leave Blood Elves as they are. They are elves after all and the elven race just is pretty and beautiful. And finally WoW has good looking male chars! ^^; When it comes to the female Blood Elves, I think they should beef them up, atleast a little. They are a little too skinny for my taste.

  12. Marie Said,

I agree with you on the point that Blood Elves do not fit with the rest of the Horde, however, that is why I like them. I like pretty characters, yet my boyfriend and many of my friends who play WoW like to be Horde. I find Blood Elves to be a nice compromise. I am, however, miffed at the male Blood Elves’ hair. How come the guys get all the pretty hair styles?

  13. Test Said,

I agree that there should have been a slight change in character design with BEs. Nothing too major so that those who want a “pretty” horde toon can have that option, but one thing could be changed. Instead of having the option to add a tiny little gotee, they should have had an option to choose a tattoo such as the NE females or the trolls. An option to add a rune tattoo on their faces would give players a way to set their BE as a more menacing character without taking away from the rest of the model.

  14. Test Said,

Also for those who state “they are elves afterall” A slight change would set them apart from the High Elves, their uncorrupted counterpart who are still in good standing with the alliance. Still to have the option not to add a menacing attribute would be preffered by some palyers so that would have to be made available.

  15. Mr. Sunwell Said,

Well, you know how the Demon Hunter looks in Warcraft 3? Not so much menacing, but still quite intimidating. There should be such as the tattoos on his body on the blood elves. Perhaps making them glow through their armor or something like that. Then again, the Elves have never been really respectful to anyone else, and have always been snooty. They wanted magic, and they didn’t care who thought about it, creating an isolationist mindset. Thus, they want to keep themselves pampered; they wish to be above the rest of everyone else, and their looks prove it. I guess.(However it is really annoying how the blood elves talk emotion is just like the night elves; striking similarities between draenei and human and blood elves and nightelves are really annoying to see in game.)
