Beefed Up Blood Elves

Posted by Stropp on October 26, 2006

According to a post on the official World of Warcraft forums, and some pictures from The Burning Crusade expansion here, Blizzard have made a few changes to the male Blood Elf models. These changes have altered the appearance to beef them up to make them look stronger and more menacing as befits a Horde character.

To be honest, even beefed up, the Blood Elves don’t look at all menacing and Hordish.

One of the reasons that I chose a Horde character, and why I really like the Orcs, is that they aren’t pretty. They’re tough, they’ve been used by evil and have redeemed themselves. They’re fighters, survivors, they have scars, and really big teeth.

Aside from the Dwarves, all of the Horde races have a huge amount more character than the Alliance races. Humans are pretty bland, the Night Elves staid and boring, and the less said about the Gnomes, the better. ;)

Horde society seems to be more oriented towards honor, except for the Forsaken who seem to be more focussed on revenge.

The Blood Elves on the other hand, are pretty. Granted, they’ve had a troubled history, but no more than any other race on Azeroth. It will be interesting to see how their story fits in with the Hordes story, but honestly, I would have preferred the Blood Elves to be Alliance. It just seems to fit better, and in some ways would have given Alliance some character.

Ogres fit so much better with the Horde Warcraft universe. The RTS games allow the use of Ogres as units, revealing the alliance between the Horde and Ogre-kind. They’re big and ugly, some are dumb, and they have so much more character. I’d have loved to be able to create a two-headed Ogre mage. That would be exceptionally cool. Here’s hoping for Ogres in a future expansion.

But we have Blood Elves. I think Blizzard have seen the light a little by beefing up the Belfs. Let’s not stop there. Make them more menacing, beefier. Make them darker, less shiny, more character. Considering how they’re supposed to be ‘bad’ let’s make them look bad. And don’t stop at the males, bad up the females too.

The Horde don’t need a bland pretty race running around.

  3. monster Said,

Wow.  This is all I have to post for this, granted it may be a lot.  It just explains EVERYTHING in which you are totally wrong." At first they remained loyal to the failing Alliance in Lordaeron and
its racist human commander in the region, Grand Marshal Garithos, who
despised all non-human races. Despite the obvious talent of their
    leader, Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider,
Garithos saw the Blood Elves as expendable and repeatedly assigned them
impossible missions, ordering them to hold off major Undead assaults
without any support from Human or Dwarven troops. Garithos hoped to use
these battles as a way to gradually kill off the Blood Elves while also
taking care of the main threat posed by The Scourge."  "The Blood Elves dress in red and black garments and style their hair in
ways that are taboo to the High Elves. They paint magical runes and
tattoos on their bodies to ward off enemies or just look threatening.
Many have abandoned traditional magic, and instead siphon dark magics
from beyond the realm. Many Blood Elves are Spell Breakers and can
steal and dominate the magical abilities of other spellcasters." "Though the Blood Elves and the former High elves were of the same race,
one could easily tell the difference between the two. Because of the
demonic energy flowing through the veins of the Blood Elves, they have
glowing green eyes, which is an indication of their demonic corruption.
It has been speculated that the Blood Elves will eventually change even
more physically as a result of their reckless use of magic, similarly
to the way the Naga and the Satyr were corrupted by their use of fel energies." Formally being High Elves.. it would only make sense that they kept the lean form.. and not become some "beefed" up cow.  They are their own, and that makes then unique.  Besides that they are a lot darker then you think.  Hey!  Ever hear the saying "Don’t judge a book by its cover."

  4. Stropp Said,

Lol. Thank you for explaining how I am totally wrong.

Actually your quote supports my argument. They tattoo themselves, use dark magic and have evidence of demonic corruption (glowing green eyes). Doesn’t look like they should be pretty to me. Perhaps they shouldn’t be as corrupted as the Forsaken, but they should be dark, menacing, and ugly. They shouldn’t look like Brittany Spears after a visit to the beauty salon, or like they are members of some psychadelic boy band.

Blood Elves are Horde. Ugly all the way.

  5. Anonymous Said,

I must admit, the blood elves shouldn’t necessarily look ugly, but the should at least look cool and at least a little evil, something that would make players want to play with them
"UGLY" is a strong word but i think they could show more "EVIL" characteristics despite anything the storyline might suggest.
most of us just want to play with a cool, new, evil, hoard character and dont care too much about minor details in storyline.
"ugly" is too strong though, for they must retain some traditional elf characteristics
this is at least what i think.

  6. sylvan Said,

what is the pint in having ugly blood elves, just because htey are horde are they suppose to be ugly? oooo they are demon possessed lets make them ugly and retarded looking, nah yo, the fact that they have demonic power int hem means ok they should possibly look a little more evil, but to make em look sorta beastly liek the orcs makes no sense, because then theywouldnt be elves.

  7. Stalven Said,

Why change the blood elf again? They’re fine the way they are. Just because they’re horde doesn’t mean they have to look UGLY or EVIL. I think they should remain the same. If Blizzard keep on changing the look of blood elves they’re going end up looking like a crossbreed of goblins and trolls. They wouldn’t be an elf anymore. Besides, the hordes needs a faction that looks pretty. At least its balanced since they have Undead.

  8. Stropp Said,

But why do the Horde need a pretty faction? So that players who want to be pretty can play as Horde? Why can’t they play an ugly character?

  9. Nurjak Said,

Ok. ya the Blood Elf should NOT be beefed up. the reason is this. they are elves…its so simple…and they sit around reading books and doin magic…..trust me if you did nothing but read and wave a small wand you would not look very beefy. so the slim look for them is good. would you rather see a blood elf rogue with the look of a frickin hulk warrior or a slim fellow who slides through the shadows? look at the classes they get. they need to be slim to make those classes look there part….wel pally is were they could look beefy…..but in truth i think ALL race builds should look diff depending on the class they pick. so there should be the final statement on why the Blood Elf should stay slim.

  10. Kaelaiden Said,

Monster, I love how you pretended to sound smart in your lore, only by plagerized the blood elfe histore from wikipedia and added the first and last sentences to make it look unique. GG!

  11. Little Bug Said,

Why does "bad" or evil have to look ugly? I think it adds more "character" to have a race that looks "pretty" and shiny and all sunny but that is actually dark.

  12. kafziel Said,

wow, STFU  all of u that think the blood elf should look ugly. THEY ARE BLOOD ELF!!!!!! you cant change sompthign that has been in WC3 and WC3FT. they look they way they look and they look fine so STFU they dont need to be beefed up at all. they are a caster race. thrive on magic NO STRENGTH AND LOOKING TOUGH!!!!. if they change it and make them look any diffrent they will destroy the race and should give them a new name. so if you want them to look ugly bec they are hord. go take ur keyboard and hang yourself. you dont ahve to be ugly to be evil.

  13. kafziel Said,

one more thing. i can only see one thing wrong with the blood elf. they get pallys…….   IMO undead should of gotten a death knight like arthis

  14. Stropp Said,

  15. Darren Said,

Exactly Kafziel, that’s why the Alliance get the fugly Lost Ones (Draenei), instead of some prettied up, complete background changed, uglier than dirt race so even it out.
Look at the Draenei in Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne, which you are quick to point to. They’re ugly. Ugly as hell. Yet the Alliance got their Draenei prettied up, instead of getting stuck with the "lost ones".
I’m with those that are on making the men leaner, but at the same time, perhaps they are buffer because of the demonic taint in them causing a small mutation. I’m not sure, all I know is a lot of people cried, it was changed, and now the same amount are crying for it to change back. Le sigh. Should have left the Belfs alone to begin with. At least, that’s my belief, since they’re almost purely magic based.

  17. Jawgar Said,

Wow. This is ridiculous, ok, sure i understand where being a die hard horde is like. However, this is an expansion, world of warcraft’s first expantion. It’s suppose to bring excitement to the game and more variety. Not complete (jealousy, hatred or wrong judgements between the old world and the new world).
I can understand why alot of people are upset. I’ve seen it, in both sides, Alliance and Horde. Alliance is completely depressed and it frigging looks like world of warcraft’s great depression. People are going insane on the Alliance side suffering for all the gear their gonna lose, and to not be able to brag as much. On the other side you have the other players that are flaming pissed theirs new races coming, because their too beautiful, or seem to not match WoW.
I’m sick of hearing the whole "evil has to look ugly or evil" BS evil doesn’t have to look like jack shi*. In fantasy worlds and the real world people that are presented as evil donnot look evil. To be evil is to be deceitful, to look harmless, it has two sides, look intimidating evil, or deceitful evil. Why do people not want to play an ugly char? Simple, they just can’t relate to the character. Just because your comfortable with looking ugly or evil as some sort of intimidation and role playing reasons, it doesn’t mean the world around you has to be like you. You have to like and enjoy the character your playing, if you find beauty in undead or being an orc then go ahead and max a horde. If you like more the peaceful look or normal then go and max an alliance. Hey whatever floats your boat.
However, i think it’s very immature to not take this into consideration. What’s going to happened when the expansion comes? instead of having fun, the Horde that are die-hard hordes are going to hate blood elves, and blood elves are going to hate being treated that way just because they look neat. And what is this going to do in the game? A big frigging conflict between both races, if they are in the same alignment they should work together as one. Not a damn war unless it’s alliance against horde, this is ridiculous how can people hate a race their not gonna play?
Hey, if you don’t like them then don’t play them. But why would you give Bloodelves a hard time just because they don’t look ugly or intimidating. I feel that the expansion is going to bring alot of hatred & jealousy with both parties. Alliance & Horde, i understand the whole pastel colors don’t make things look too evil. But why expect the stereo-type evil? ugly, big, intimidating, dark etc… ? why separate ourselves from our own alliance?
We get the opportunity for once to become Paladins and kick some alliance’s ass, were going to re-invent the paladins race, that’s not enough? instead of sugar coated since your evil, would you like it vomited coated with blood?
    Enough said…

  20. A WoW addict Said,

For 1…..they made the blood elves wih the horde for 2 reasons….to many people complaining about them wanting to be elves and it goes more with the history. The blood elves were under attack by the night elves and the undead helped…and asked them to join the horde. They look more buffed (and if u compare to the night elves, SHORTER),because when the Well Of Eternity exploded, they had samples. As a result, they got a magic addiction:with that addiction, they’re skin bleached to red and they shrank. And if u look, they can’t be warriors:this is because of they’re magic addiction i already talked about.
The new alliance race is with the alli because when the Exator crashed, the Burning Legion attacked them.Meanwhile, the night elves were exploring the island and found and help them.

  21. Unindiv Said,

Meh… The Sin’Dorei Look FINE if you ask me. They’re like these evil, plotting creatures… just what the Horde needed amongst all the big muscular races. And I kinda look like one, so you’d better not call em pretty, that’s a lie. ;)
I’d say, Blood Elves all the way!

  22. latitude Said,

nothing like a little civil discord… i, for one, am impressed with the number of characters griping about the "plague of bloodelves" that are rushing off to the other newbie zones; i suspect that people dislike the BE newbie zone’s constant crashes, and are wanting to quickly level their new toons, so they go to where they are familiar with the area and quests.

  23. Djindari Said,

I love the Horde but it does get tiring playing a race that looks like a Halloween cosutme….BRING on the beauty..

  24. Dyaeva Said,

If I was a Die hard Alliance I would be pissed right now…. They used to have the Dour, Tree Hugging, Elune Be Prasied, Freaky Night Elves as the most beautiful race in Azeroth….
Now not only do they NOT have the most beatiful race but The Blood Elves are unapologetically Happy about being Drop Dead Gorgeous….
….and don’t even get me started on the Silvermoon and Eversong Forest. They make Stormwind look like the Swamp of Sorrows.
    GO BLOOD ELVES

  25. Heliotrope Said,

I disagree in so many ways… but each is entitled to their own opinion, so there’s no point in saying "You’re wrong" and attempting to prove my point…
…although I don’t like when people refer to the Horde as the "bad" faction.  In fact Thrall’s dreams and motives for the new Horde may be more righteous than any other "person" on Azeroth.  Though we do now havetwo seemingly evil races, they’re still not inherently evil just because they’re more monstrous and savage than the Alliance.
As for the Blood Elves, I enjoy how such a pretty race can have a hidden evil… pretty city, nice looking folks… yet they come off as menacing just by their habits and the sheer power they’ve been known to command.  You may not like them - suit yourself - but I’ll enjoy playing a Shadow Priest bent on sucking the mana out of people…

  26. anonymous Said,

lol man, the blood elves aren’t evil. They’re a struggling, independent race trying to find it’s place in the world, that’s why they joined the Horde. Just because races in the Horde looks savage and beastial doesn’t mean they’re evil. The Horde are pretty much the underdogs of the warcraft universe. Besides, we need some race as pretty as the Blood Elves to join the Horde, atleast we can attract more players, especially the superficial lil kids and females who only care about looking good.

  28. Valefor Said,

I definately don’t agree with you Stropp. The horde doesn’t need to look phisically intimidating to be in the horde. And if you don’t loke the blood elves then DON’T PLAY THEM! There is really no point in discriminationg them if u arent gonna use them. Yea sure everyone has their own opinion, but you shouldn’t try to force someone into your viewpoint just because you don’t agree.

  29. Stropp Said,

    Thanks for your comment Valefor.

First I should say that I haven’t actually forced my viewpoint on anyone. I’ve shared my opinion on this blog, that’s true enough, but nowhere have I said that people have to have the same viewpoint I have. That’s okay, I like many different opinions. Makes for good reading.

In fact, if you’ve read the comments on this and other related posts you might find that some of them take the tone of shouting me down. So you might say, other people are trying to force me to take their viewpoint.

Let me state once and for all. I will never discriminate against another player for choosing a species or class that I don’t personally like playing. Well, maybe Gnomes… no, not even then.

I have never said that I won’t group with or trade with a Blood Elf. That sort of behaviour is stupid and immature. It shows signs of someone taking themselves way too seriously. This is a game, it’s meant to be fun.

  30. kyle Said,

    wow is the best

  31. Emrys Said,

Personally? This civil discord might be a bit of a blessing for the RP realms; story-wise many of the horde are discontent with the blood elves; the Trolls in particular.
As for the whole debate of how an ‘evil’ race should look: evil is defined by one’s actions, not by one’s face.
The only thing I truly dread is that we may get a few too many Blood Elf "drizzt" knock-offs, wanting to be misunderstood good guys.
Blood Elves are horde, and instead of trying to argue about wether or not they should be there, respect them for what they are, take into account their weaknesses, and if you don’t like them, don’t play them. Simple, no?

  32. brian Said,

okay kafziel i agree that UD should have gotten death knite but there’s only one problem, first of all death knites are Scourge not forsaken, scourge are mindless zombies under the control of one mind which was the lich king and now it’s the lich king/arthas which is actually still just the lich king. but yeah they should have made sum original race for the UD like necromancers or banshees or sumtin……

  33. Ashie Said,

    Hi,
I think the way they look is fine! They look like the used to be good, but they turned evil.Yeah, they dont look like the typical horde type, but it’s good to have variety! So what if they’re nice looking? I would never have joined the horde if Blood Elves weren’t nice looking! I used to be an alliance player, simply because they looked better, but as soon as Blood Elves came up, I tried to horde and I loved it! I’m a girl, I want my character to look nice and somewhat resemble myself.Anyway, if they don’t look scary.. no one would suspect they are strong.

  34. Summerdawn of Kirin Tor Said,

You know what I’ve found rather funny about the posts on this thread? People seem to be…hell-bent on sticking the Horde with the "Evil" label.
First off, kafziel, there’s nothing wrong with Pally’s, and you’d have known that if you’d read the Lore behind it. The Blood Elves captured a Naaru, a being that can best described, and I quote "As the Light incarnate". So, of course they have Pallys. Also, they had priests in WCIII, which you seem to like using as an example. Also, please stop with all the "STFU", the bad spelling and the "Go hang yourself with your keyboard." You aren’t cool for suggesting stuff like that….just annoying. You come across as a 12 year old. And, for talking like that, you belong with the rest of the people who "cyberez" in Goldshire.
2nd: Why does everyone insist on calling the Horde "Evil". They aren’t. Flat out. There are only 3 races in the entire game that can be considered "Evil." There’s the Legion, the Scourge and (I hate to say it but,) the bulk of the Forsaken. I know, people don’t like to hear it, but, (up until recently) the Forsaken wanted to create a new plauge. So…..
Now, everyone else who says that they should have left the Blood Elves skinnier, I can see your point. They are a magically addicted people, and, the males at any rate, don’t practice a whole lot of physical combat.  However….as they BE’s are allowed to be Rogues, Hunters and Paladins, I suppose they needed to buff the Blood Elves up a bit to physically represent those classes.  Also, they fact that the Horde is made up of more brutish, rough-and-tumble races, they needed to be larger just to fit in.
Also, take a look at Kael’Thas in WCIII, all he was wearing were robes and a mantle. He wasn’t super skinny, just by looking at his robes in concept art, fan art and the game itself. So, I think the right choice was made.
But, that’s just my opinion, and in the long run I suppose it doesn’t really matter because Blizzard has to do what the bulk of their fan-base asks for. It just makes good business sense.
And for the record? Metzen and Blizzard rock.

  35. Syhn Said,

You obviously got no idea what are you talking about and your knowledge of the warcraft universe is poor and highly limited.
None, nor horde races nor alliance races are evil as a general fact, for example take Thrall or Grom who helped humans at the time.
A blood elves are basically high elves who where corrupted by hunger for mana, it doesn’t means they should grow a tail or get bloated with some weird green ooze just to get that intimidating look, and by the way, it was a human general who refused to aid the blood elves when the scourge attacked them and led to an almost complete annihilation of the whole blood elven population, later on, the remnants of the keep were rejected by the human leaders and left to die by the scourge, Thrall seen the troubled nation and decided to let them join the horde as even members, who’s evil now?

I think the blood elfs are actullay good and that they should not be beefed up because the males are quite big anyway , but the females should be made a little bit more hoter(if you know what i mean) like the night elf in the film at the start. c ya

Look I think that the blood elves should be on the alliance and the Draeni should be on the horde because the blood elves look kind and noble as the Draeni are Beefy and Have tails. But of course that is just my opinion.

  39. Anomynous Person Said,

Look people, the horde isn’t evil. Not in any way, what so ever. They are made up of the races that have lost everything and had to start again, shaped by their honour and hardships. Sylvanas leads the forsaken, and she had lost everything, and became undead. The orcs lost everything in what is now outland, and escaped to Azeroth, only to be chased away to Durotar. The jungle trolls led by Vol’jin had lost everything and were saved by Thrall, according to the prologue in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and the Tauren were on the brink of extinction at the hands of the centaur before Thrall and the Horde came in. The blood elves fit in with this faction because of Lord Garithos’ racism towards nonhumans, their magic addiction, and the fact that their kingdom was ravished by Arthas.

Just to make it all clear. :P

  40. Rahndum dude Said,

chocolate dude ….i think the female blood elves are much more hotter than the night elves. Look imma do some comparison on how they stack up

night elf female = Playboy model (not quite beautiful enough to be a VS model)

  41. Mizukii Said,

first of all its funny on the fact someone said alliance should get BE and horde should get Drania But that throughs off the ratio somebit like drania are really beefed up like tauren are for the horde side. thought id just say that ^^. the fact that BE look pretty and stuff is kind of evil in a good way cause its like a scene in an anime where the hot popular person looks likes a goody goody but people dont see how much evil there really is behind that person. Then *WAM* *BAM* and *SLAM* it gets u when u look away. lol to me thats how i look at em but thats just me.^^

  42. Mizukii Said,

oh yeah and my BE palli and BE rogue are on SERVER: Blackhand if any of ya want to come say hi my Rogues name is Shizuki and my palli’s name is Mizukii, oh and if ur wonderin im not asian or any of that i get asked that alot . i just like japanese character names.

  43. Anna Said,

I like the views everyone has for this topic, but I think it may be appropriate now to submit my opinion.
Blood Elves are lovely creatures, yes. As a woman, I find them aesthetically pleasing and like thier make-up. As a tomboy, though, I find them slightly unsatisfying in the sense that their bodies are not made for hand-to-hand combat. They’re better suited for magic.
Just because Blood Elves look attractive to most doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the lesser of the evils in the Horde. Personally, I think their appearance gives them an advantage in war (if it were real, of course) because others more readily trust beautiful people as opposed to less attractive ones. I know that whenever I see a beautiful face, a little voice goes off in the back of my mind saying, ‘This person looks too pretty to ever want to hurt me.’ So, in that respect, I think they’re necessary characters in the Horde because if WoW were a real place, I doubt you could pull off having an Orc as a spy in Stormwind.
