Big Downtime – Again

Well, it looks like there will be another extended downtime again this week. This time though it’s going to be a 36 hour downtime. That’s a biggie.

It doesn’t really affect me too much though. As I previously mentioned, Tuesday nights are pretty much a write off anyway, and I have some work sponsored study on Wednesday nights.

I just hope that this hardware upgrade to the servers fixes the disconnection problem that I have been having.

It started on Saturday night. I had been in the game all day and I was questing in BRD with some friends. We had just killed General Angerforge. Then it happened. Freeze and disconnect. I logged back in and loaded Stropp up, and thirty seconds later… back to the login screen. Spent the next thirty minutes or so trying to stay in the game for more than thirty seconds. I rebooted my computer, no luck. I rebooted my router, no joy. Finally I logged out and read a book.

When I logged in on Sunday morning, I was a little worried that the issue would still be there. It wasn’t. I played all Sunday again, with a few breaks, and everything seemed to work well.

Then on Monday evening I logged in. I caught a Zep to Grom Grol and joined a raid to help The Ministry of Offence (my guild) collect heavy leather for Thorium Brotherhood faction. Shorty after I arrived… freeze, disconnect. You know the rest.

The odd thing about this though was that I was able to log in to all of my alts, Stickler my Rogue, Cerzae my Priest, and Xervish my Mage, and play them with no disconnects. If I logged in to Stropp, invariably I would be disconnected. Very frustrating.

It appears that I’m not alone here. I checked the WoW technical support forums and there seem to be a few people posting there with the same issue. The advice is to check that the router firmware is updated, and the network drivers are also up to date. Good advice in any case and I’ll check that. But it doesn’t seem to gel with the M.O. of the problem.

If it is my hardware why does this problem occur irregularly, and why does it occur on only on Stropp?
